2025 Evnroll Carlsbad Putters

Posted by GolfBox on 5th Dec 2024

There are a couple of burning questions waiting to be answered about Evnroll’s new Carlsbad putter line. The first is why’s it called Carlsbad. The second is why Evnroll took so darn long to make it happen.

The answer to the first question is straightforward. The Carlsbad name pays tribute to the famous Californian golf industry town where Evnroll resides.

But we suspect only Evnroll’s inimitable founder and chief designer, Guerin Rife, can provide the answer to the second question. Because after seeing the new Carlsbad putters we can’t believe he left it until now to release a value-focused Evnroll range.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Evnroll have been making some pretty schmick premium putters since they began in 2016.

Given their impressive track record of innovation and considerable investment in their brand-defining Sweetface technology, it’s mindboggling that Evnroll aren’t topdogs of the putter world.

But the new Evnroll Carlsbad might be about to flip that on its head.

Carlsbad is a high-performing, value-focused release that brings Evnroll putters within touching distance of more budget-conscious, mainstream golfers.

Evnroll’s initial Carlsbad release consists of two moderately-priced putters, the B1 and M1.

EVNROLL CARLSBAD B1 PUTTER

Can a new putter line-up be taken seriously if it doesn’t offer a classic heel-toe weighted blade? Evnroll certainly don’t think so. Hence, they have included the B1 blade in the Carlsbad range. It’s a classic Anser shape in a slightly larger profile and it comes with another classic inclusion: an elongated plumber’s neck hosel that offers a slight amount of toe hang.

EVNROLL CARLSBAD M1

Can a new putter line-up be taken seriously if it doesn’t… let’s just get to the point. The Evnroll Carlsbad M1 is your classic, full-sized, low-profile mallet. Its head looks similar to Evnroll’s new ZERO Z5s mallet, with gently curving wings connecting to a rear bar that offers stability and forgiveness, as well as serving as a handy alignment aid. The M1’s short slant hosel balances the mallet with a moderate level of toe hang.

FULL SWEETFACE INSERT

Evnroll introduced a new face insert in their Neo Classic putter line earlier this year.

It was milled from 6061 aluminium, which is the same premium kind of aluminium they make planes from. Affixed to the rear of the insert was a polymer backing plate.

The insert performed beautifully for Evnroll. It provided an incredibly solid yet soft feel and because it was made from lightweight aluminium, it freed up discretionary weight that was repurposed in far more beneficial areas of the putter head.

The grooves on the new insert were also the Sweetface kind, which is Evnroll’s proprietary face groove technology.

Explaining Sweetface is simple. It’s like having one giant sweetspot across the entire length of the face. How it works is also ingeniously simple.

The Sweetface grooves are wider in the centre then become progressively narrower towards the heel and toe areas.

The wider groove in the centre imparts less energy to the ball at impart, resulting in a slower ball speed. Meanwhile, the narrower grooves impart more energy to the ball, increasing ball speed. Add it all together and you have a consistent ball speed across the entire width of the putter face.

You’re probably wondering how this is all relevant to the Carlsbad range. Well, Evnroll are using this same premium insert in the Carlsbad range.

PRECISION PRESSURE CAST AND SURFACE MILLED

The main differentiator between the Carlsbad range and Evnroll’s premium collections won’t be immediately apparent, so we’ll give you a clue.

The putter head in both Carlsbad putters isn’t of the milled variety. Well, not exactly.

Evnroll’s Carlsbad putters are “precision pressure cast”. It’s a process designed for incredibly tight tolerances and precise shaping. However, things get a little confusing here. The cast body is then surface milled, which leaves the impression and texture of a milled putter.

Carlsbad putters might have cast heads but they are milled to a finish.
