Callaway Big Bertha Irons & Hybrids 2019
Posted by GolfBox on 15th Nov 2018
They’re longer, they’re definitely more forgiving and they’re easier than ever to launch: they are Callaway’s new Big Bertha irons.
Callaway’s Big Bertha brand goes way back, to 1991 to be exact, when the company unleashed their legendary driver to the golfing masses.
A lot of clubs have passed through the racks since then, but Callaway hold the Big Bertha title in such esteem that it is the current moniker for their game improvement line.
And the new Callaway Big Bertha irons continue the heritage of innovation and first-class performance that is synonymous with such a celebrated brand name.
GAME IMPROVEMENT GOODNESS
Callaway Big Bertha irons have always been about speed, distance, launch and forgiveness; traits that make the game more enjoyable for high handicappers, golfers who could do with a few more yards, and those who just need a super user-friendly iron that can take a bad strike and turn it into a semi-playable outcome.
The new Callaway Big Bertha irons expand on the objectives of the previous Big Bertha models that were first launched in 2014 and updated in 2016.
However, the new 2019 Callaway Big Bertha irons aren’t merely a twist on existing technology; they are packed full of new features that push innovation and performance to a whole new level.
BIG BERTHA'S CORE PROMISE
The big ticket feature in Big Bertha irons is what Callaway call a Suspended Energy Core.
Yes, it sounds like something that sits deep within the bowels of a nuclear reactor but it actually serves a very similar purpose – it’s there to bring a bit of oomph to your long game.
The Suspended Energy Core is a piece of MIMd (Metal Injection Moulding) tungsten that is suspended in a polymer casing injected with thousands of urethane microspheres.
Microspheres may be small by nature but they have a rather large bearing on the feel of the new Big Bertha irons by damping vibrations while also improving acoustics at impact for a satisfying resonance.
The Suspended Energy Core is positioned near the sole on the rear of the irons to concentrate the centre of gravity (CG) low and deep, for easy-to-launch ball flights.
FRESH FACED
The Suspended Energy Core is just one piece of the puzzle, with the Big Bertha irons’ face featuring Callaway’s 360 Face Cup - a proven technology that becomes even more effective in conjunction with the new Suspended Energy Core.
The 360 Face Cup, which deforms and releases at impact, was able to be made thinner than ever in the new Big Bertha irons because of the improved launch angles that were achieved by implementing the Suspended Energy Core.
The result is an impressive boost in ball speed, making the new Big Bertha irons the longest distance irons Callaway has ever produced.
CALLAWAY'S BIG FINISH
As game improvement clubs, Big Bertha irons have a wide and deep head, thick top line and generous offset.
It’s more a confidence-inspiring appearance than the sleek and sharp lines of Callaway's X Forged and Apex MB players' iron. But what makes Big Bertha irons catch the eye so well is a grey, smoked PVD finish, which truly looks sublime.
Recoil ESX and ZT9 graphite shafts or KBS Max 90 steel shafts are the stock fitting options on Callaway Big Bertha irons (4-AW).
CALLAWAY BIG BERTHA HYBRIDS
Joining the Big Bertha irons at GolfBox in January 2019 is a new range of Callaway Big Bertha hybrids.
The latest Callaway Big Bertha hybrids offer effortless distance and high launch, with the bonus of adjustability through a new OptiFit hosel.
Callaway’s famous Jailbreak technology is employed for the very first time in a hybrid and the resulting performance suggests it was a smart decision.
AN ABRIDGED HISTORY OF JAILBREAK
Jailbreak technology is built around two small rods that sit inside the clubhead directly behind the clubface.
Their appearance resembles the bars found in a jail cell, which is the inspiration behind the Jailbreak name.
The two rods support and stiffen the crown and sole meaning there is less movement in the clubhead, allowing greater flexibility in the club face for hotter ball speeds and more distance.
HYBRID HARMONY - JAILBREAK AND ADJUSTABILITY
The new Callaway Big Bertha hybrids have an ultra-fast and thin steel face that uses Callaway's Hyper Speed Face Cup.
The new Face Cup-Jailbreak combination boosts ball speeds across the entire face, making it extremely forgiving even when strikes come from areas not even remotely near the centre of the face.
The redesigned hosel provides the option to alter ball flights and shape and is shorter and lighter so extra weight can be used to optimise the CG for easy launching and maximum distance.
With the Big Bertha hybrids available in lofts ranging from 3H-8H, the head shape gets more progressive as the lofts increase for greater playability out of any lie on the course.
A premium Recoil ESX or ZT9 graphite shaft is the standard Big Bertha hybrid fitting option.
