Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedges - In the Groove

Posted by GolfBox on 16th Nov 2017

Callaway have quite literally found a new groove with their Mack Daddy 4 wedge line-up.

It all started when the Callaway R&D team decided to implement a new groove technology to generate greater spin and control in the new MD4 wedge range.

But it wasn’t as simple as knocking a couple more grooves into the face of the new MD4 wedges; Callaway were thinking small, as in milling micro grooves and ridges in between the 16 regular grooves.

To establish the new ‘groove-in-groove’ technology, Callaway had to come up with a new cutting tool to produce the ‘micro-positive’ surface texture in the MD4 range. The new process creates more contact points with the ball at impact through three main ‘micro-ridges’ in the strike zone and ‘micro grooves’ milled in between the ridges.

With more contact points in play to grab the ball, more spin is created. And Callaway are confident the MD4 is the market leader in the spin stakes. To increase control, particularly on shorter wedge shots, Callaway have also included a ‘Nip-It’ groove near the MD4’s leading edge.

Callaway had the ‘wedge whisperer’ Roger Cleveland design the new MD4 wedges and he has refined the overall shape for a tighter, straighter appearance that clearly takes its cues from premium Tour wedges.

Four aluminium weighting ports on the back of the Callaway MD4 wedges position the centre of gravity precisely. The CG is shifted further up the face as lofts increase through the MD4 range to guarantee a consistent flight with each wedge.

THE COMPREHENSIVE CALLAWAY MD4 WEDGE RANGE

While the MD4 range raises the bar for performance, Callaway realise that not all golfers and courses are created equal.

That’s why there are four grinds (S, W, C, X), nine lofts (46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 64 degrees) and 21 possible grind-loft combinations in the Callaway MD4 wedge range that will work with just about any swing or course condition.

Whether you swing with a steep or shallow angle of attack into the ball, encounter soft fluffy lies in the manicured fairway or are more used to tight lies on a granite-like goat-track, Callaway has an MD4 wedge that will enhance your performance.

The Callaway MD4 S grind is the most versatile wedge in the range and can be used to play a wide variety of shots. The S grind won’t add bounce if the wedge is open or closed and it will suit steep or shallow angles of attack into the ball.

The Callaway MD4 C grind has a limited degree of relief around the heel, toe and trailing edge and will sit low and flush with the ground. The C grind is the wedge of choice for shallower swing angles and firmer conditions.

More suited to softer conditions and a steep swing is the Callaway MD4 W grind. It has a wide and forgiving sole, big bounce and is ideal for bunker play.

New to the Callaway Mack Daddy wedge range is the MD4 X grind and will suit sweepers of the ball. The X grind combines elements of the C and W grinds, using narrower grinds and lower bounce, but is only available in higher lofts (58 and 60 degrees). The MD4 X Grind is the wedge to use when you regularly play high shots from a tight lie.

Callaway MD4 wedges are constructed from soft 8620 Mild Carbon steel range and can be ordered in either a Platinum Chrome or Matte Black finish.

A True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue 115 shaft and red Lamkin UTx grip is the standard offering on every Callaway MD4 wedge.
