Callaway Rogue Driver and Fairway Review | GolfBox
Posted by GolfBox on 31st Jan 2018
First came the Epic Jailbreak, now Callaway have officially gone Rogue with their latest driver.
Callaway haven't badged their new driver the Rogue just because it sounds like it's pushing new frontiers - the new driver has some serious swagger to back up the title.
The attention to detail paid to every component of the Callaway Rogue driver has resulted in performance gains worthy of the Rogue name, with the new 460cc driver raising the bar to be the lightest, fastest, longest and most forgiving driver Callaway have ever stamped their name on.
The new Callaway Rogue driver will be released at GolfBox on February 9
THE JAILBREAK EFFECT
The Jailbreak technology that was introduced in the popular GBB Epic driver forms the basis of the new Callaway Rogue driver, only this time it's been fine-tuned and enhanced to feed into what Callaway call the "Jailbreak Effect".
Callaway's Jailbreak technology is composed of two internal titanium rods that link the crown and sole to make the clubhead stiffer, for overall faster ball speeds. In the Callaway Rogue driver, the Jailbreak rods have become more like an hourglass in appearance to save weight, but the new shape doesn't affect their capacity to stiffen the Rogue's body in any way.
Saving weight in one area and redistributing it elsewhere to enhance the CG (centre of gravity) is a great way to make a driver perform better, but the Rogue's Jailbreak technology has also enabled Callaway to employ a new clubface design called the X-Face VFT, which pretty much describes the Callaway Rogue's clubface: on the inside of the face, slap bang in the middle, is a large "X" that has varying levels of face thickness (VFT) in strategic areas.
VFT enlarges the zone on the clubface that boosts ball speed and distance, meaning the Rogue face picks up the slack more than ever when a strike is off-centre. And by varying the face thickness, mass is positioned back in the Rogue's clubhead to improve the CG and boost MOI (moment of inertia) for added forgiveness.
The integration of these two components gives us the "Jailbreak effect" and is a huge factor in helping the Rogue top the charts in the ball speed and distance categories.
FLYING HIGH WITH BOEING
The Callaway Rogue's performance as it slices through the air on its way to striking the ball has been assessed and tweaked by Boeing - yes, that's right, the Boeing that makes the jumbo jet.
Boeing engineers worked with Callaway to introduce a "Speed Step" on the crown, right near the edge of the face. The "Speed Step" is designed to manipulate the drag over the Callaway Rogue's leading edge and control the rotation of the clubhead, while also boosting clubhead speed with greater efficiency through the air.
LIGHT'N'EASY
Callaway have always been leaders in the use of carbon composites in their clubs. The Callaway Rogue driver continues the tradition with a triaxial carbon crown, the biggest ever fitted to a driver, which is no surprise given the Rogue's footprint is noticeably larger looking down at address. The weight savings from the crown are transferred to the Rogue's perimeter, where it helps to increase the MOI and forgiveness.
The Callaway Rogue driver is available in 9, 10.5 and 13.5 degree lofts with a choice of Adila Quaranta, Adila Synergy or Project X Even Flow shafts.
For all those thumpers out there who can whip it good and generate serious clubhead speed, the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero shares the same technology as the regular Callaway Rogue driver but produces less spin.
The Callaway Rogue Sub Zero has a tweaked head shape that concentrates the CG low, deep and neutral to the clubhead's centre axis: ideal conditions for a high launch while keeping the spin down for maximum distance.
The Callaway Sub Zero has two weight ports, on the front and rear of the sole, with interchangeable 2g and 14g weights. It gives the option of altering the spin rate by 200rpm when swapped: the 14g weight in the front shifts the CG forward to lower the spin and launch angle; swapping the 2g weight to the front will move the CG back to boost spin, forgiveness and produce a higher launch angle.
The Callaway Rogue Sub Zero is available in 9 and 10.5 degree lofts and comes fitted with a Project X Even Flow shaft.
All you slicers and faders out there, it's time to listen up. If you think a new Callaway Rogue driver can't help correct your distance-killing slice, you're correct. But good news: the Callaway Rogue Draw can.
Callaway want to make the game easier for everyone so the Rogue Draw driver features all the same distance-producing and forgiveness-enhancing technology as the regular Callaway Rogue driver, but has a 5g sole weight located near the heel.
Five grams of heel weight might not sound like much but it has a miraculous effect by shifting the CG inward to help close the face and increase the gear effect to reduce slice spin and/or promote a draw ball flight.
The Callaway Rogue Draw is available in 9, 10.5 and 13.5 degree lofts with a choice of Adila Quaranta, Adila Synergy or Project X Even Flow shafts.
Jailbreak technology makes its debut in the Callaway Rogue fairway wood range and ties in seamlessly with Callaway's successful Face Cup technology.
It was quite a feat to make Jailbreak work in Rogue fairway woods, with the smaller volume clubheads having very distinct and separate characteristics to drivers. The Jailbreak rods had to be positioned in a different location in every Rogue fairway wood in the range to optimise their capabilities, but Callaway have made it work with incredible precision.
Callaway Rogue fairway woods get hourglass shaped rods made from steel instead of the titanium used in the Rogue driver for greater durability, and the Jailbreak design makes the ultra-thin steel face on the Rogue fairway woods even hotter, "lensing" energy back into the ball for greater speed. Callaway's Face Cup technology allows the edges of the Callaway Rogue fairway wood to flex for a hinging action that distributes speed evenly across almost the entire face.
Callaway Rogue fairway woods also feature a carbon fibre crown and the Boeing "Speed Step" to improve airflow across the leading edge of the clubs.
Callaway Rogue fairway woods are available in 3, 3+, 4, 5 Heavenwood, 7, 9 and 11 lofts and are fitted with a choice of Adila Quaranta, Adila Synergy or Project X Even Flow shafts.
CALLAWAY ROGUE SUB ZERO FAIRWAY WOODS
Just like the Callaway Rogue driver range, the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero fairway wood is the go-to option for more powerful players who require less spin.
Featuring all the same technology as the regular Callaway Rogue fairway wood range, the Callaway Rogue Sub Zero fairway woods have a 5g weight screw in the front part of the sole to position the CG lower for a low spin and low launch that is ideal to generate distance for faster swingers of the club.
The Callaway Rogue Sub Zero comes in 3, 3+ and 5 lofts and are fitted with a Project X Even Flow shaft.
