Charley Hull What's in the Bag (2024)

Posted by GolfBox on 23rd Aug 2024

Charley Hull has been a star on the rise in women’s golf the past couple of seasons and the Englishwoman is firmly entrenched inside the top 10 on the Rolex Rankings.

Charley turned pro as a 16-year-old in 2013 and immediately made an impact, claiming LET Rookie of the Year honours before winning the LET Order of Merit in 2014.

She began playing on the LPGA Tour full time in 2015 and finished fourth on the CME Standings in 2016 after notching her first LPGA title at the season-ending Tour Championship. In 2022, Hull won her second LPGA event at the Volunteers of America Classic in Texas then posted runner-up finishes at both the US and British Opens in 2023 — results that saw her attain her lowest ever world ranking of 7.

Charley Hull is known as one of the true characters of women’s golf and boasts over half a million fans on social media. Her on-course vape clouds are legendary, but the 28-year-old went viral when she gave up vaping in favour of puffing on cigarettes during the 2024 US Women’s Open.

Her bag is chock full of low-spinning, low-launching clubs that are outliers on the LPGA Tour.

Here are the clubs in Charley Hull’s bag:

DRIVER — TAYLORMADE Qi10 LS (8°)

Charley switched from TaylorMade’s Stealth 2 driver to the new TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver in 2024 and the move is paying dividends. The Qi10’s high-forgiveness design and carbon fibre face are working well for Charley: she is averaging 270 yards off the tee in 2024, a six-yard gain on the previous season. The Qi10’s new carbon fibre infinity crown allowed TaylorMade to shift mass deeper in the head, lowering the centre of gravity for a higher launch while also elevating MOI and forgiveness. Charley plays the more compact and low-spinning LS model — a rarity on the LPGA Tour — but she has upped the loft of her 8° LS driver to 9.5° via the Qi10’s adjustable loft sleeve. A UST Mamiya Attas 6 Star 6X shaft is installed on Charley’s current Qi10 LS driver, a shaft that Charley has been using for nearly a decade.

FAIRWAY WOOD — TAYLORMADE Qi10 TOUR (3W, 15°)

Charley carries a TaylorMade Qi10 Tour three wood in her bag and it sees plenty of action off the tee and from the fairway during a round. Featuring a titanium head and face, Charley’s Qi10 Tour three wood is the lowest-spinning and most compact (170cc) of the three Qi10 fairway woods. It also features TaylorMade’s carbon fibre infinity crown and a 50g adjustable sole weight, which gives Charley the ability to dial in a fade or draw bias. A Mitsubishi Tensei AV Blue 75 S shaft is fitted to Charley’s Qi10 Tour three wood.

HYBRID — TAYLORMADE SIM MAX (19°)

Filling the gap between Charley’s three wood and four iron is a TaylorMade SIM Max hybrid. The SIM Max hybrid looks more like a fairway wood than an iron but is an ideal long iron replacement for Charley’s game. She can hit high launching and soft-landing long shots into the green with significantly more forgiveness than a two or three iron would offer. Charley’s TaylorMade’s SIM Max hybrid was replaced by the current Qi10 Rescue.

IRONS — TAYLORMADE P7MB (4-PW)

While many of Charley’s colleagues on the LPGA Tour play cavity back irons, Charley is one of only a handful of women pros playing a full set of blade irons. She plays TaylorMade P7MB irons in her bag, which are classic, forged muscleback blades. It’s an unusual iron choice for an LPGA Tour player but Charley has only ever played blade irons — she even played blade irons when learning the game as a young girl. P7MB irons offer a premium level of feedback and pure feel and while they aren’t as forgiving as other irons, Charley is able to find the sweet spot with regularity. She plays Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 125 S shafts in her P7MB irons which are rather heavy, but Charley clearly prefers a weightier feel in her irons.

WEDGES — TAYLORMADE MG4 RAW (50°, 54°, 60°)

Charley plays a trio of TaylorMade MG4 wedges, with an even spread of lofts helping her execute just about any short game shot required. Milled Grind 4 wedges follow on from the MG3 wedge and offer more consistent spin rates via an innovative groove pattern on the face. MG4 wedges help Charley play with finesse around the greens and the raw finish rusts over time, increasing grip and spin off the clubface while enhancing feel. Charley opts for the standard bounce her 50° and 54° MG4 wedges while her 60° MG4 wedge features a low bounce (8°) grind. She uses Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 125 S shafts in her wedges, which are identical to the shafts she plays in her irons.

PUTTER — TAYLORMADE TP SOTO

Charley has played a TaylorMade TP Soto putter for nearly three years after previously playing a Scotty Cameron putter earlier in her career. Her TP Soto is a traditional putter and is characterised by classic, clean lines and a plumber’s neck hosel. Twin 15g weights are installed in the blade putter’s sole, while a Pure Roll polymer insert on the face promotes a soft, top-spinning roll that gets putts tracking on line right after impact.

BALL — TAYLORMADE TP5x

The low-spinning 2024 TaylorMade TP5x is a ball that appears to complement Charley’s game perfectly. It’s a five-layer tour ball with a firmer feel (compression 71) than its TP5 sibling. It offers extreme low-spin performance with the driver — and a flatter and lower trajectory than its TP5 sibling — but around the greens the TP5x offers plenty of spin and stopping power — just not as much as the TaylorMade TP5 ball.
