Cleveland RTX-3 Wedge - Review

Cleveland RTX-3 Wedge - Review

Posted by Alex Etches on 20th Sep 2016

The latest release of the RTX range arrives with an improved CG location, rougher milled face and specific grinds to suit each individual golfers requirement.

"A shank is nearly a good shot"

I'm allowed to type S-H-A-N-K, but verbally the word causes the same reaction as hearing 'Voldemort'. There is nothing worse than hitting the Shank and hearing your playing partner shout "Nearly a good shot!". Well, there are some truths to this. As in previous wedge design, the weight of the hosel would shift the CG location closer the the heel. This meaning, that the sweet spot was very close to the 'Thomas Tank' (Shank) location which is not ideal! Thankfully!, this has been changed with the RTX-3.

How have they changed this?

With a clever weight change, Cleveland has managed to achieve a very effective CG location within the RTX-3. A shorter hosel design and the inclusion of a internal Micro Cavity allows for an overall weight shift of 9g. This pushes the CG towards to centre of the head for greater wedge control.

Are you a digger, sweeper, steeper or shallower?

Cleveland have 3 grinds available for the RTX-3, these include the V-LG, V-MG or the V-FG. Each grind targets different individuals and their angles of attack or course conditions. Each bounce features one of three grinds that will best benefit the golfers requirements.

V-LG - A Narrow sole design that will benefit the golfer with the shallow angle of attack or for use in firmer conditions. (Shallower/Sweeper)

V-MG - A Mid sole that allows the club face to be opened or closed. Very versatile and is ideal for most conditions. (Neutral)

V-FG - A Full and forgiving sole that will benefit the golfer with a steep angle of attack or for the use in softer conditions. (Steeper/Digger).

The third generation of the Rotex face arrives with further improvements, to an already impressive design. All new New Tour Zip Grooves are deeper and narrower than last year to improve spin control throughout the range. This accompanies, two patterns of laser milling on the face that enhances specific shot making abilities. The 46-52 degrees have a straighter pattern that benefits full/high shots, with the 54-64 degrees featuring an angled pattern that enhanced spin on open club faced shots.

To rust or not to rust? that is the question.
