Dustin Johnson What's in the Bag? (2024)

Dustin Johnson What's in the Bag? (2024)

Posted by GolfBox on 25th Nov 2024

or a golfer who seems nonplussed about most things out on the course, two-time major winner Dustin Johnson isn’t quite so nonchalant when it comes to choosing his golf clubs.

Big Dusty’s best is almost unbeatable and his long, fluid swing generates effortless power. He used it to great effect at the 2020 Masters when winning his second major, playing some unbelievable golf to win the green jacket by five strokes. And in the process, Johnson recorded the lowest winning total in Masters history at 20-under par.

A former world No.1 and FedEx Cup champion, the laidback American joined the LIV Tour in 2022 and capted his 4Aces team to win the inaugural team championship. DJ started 2024 with a win at LIV Las Vegas and despite his big game, he generally lets his clubs do the talking.

What clubs does Dustin Johnson use:

WITB UPDATE: 25/11/2024: Dustin Johnson plays TaylorMade Qi10 driver and fairway wood, TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 wedges and plays a L.A.B. DF3 putter. (LIV Teams Championship)

WITB UPDATE 24/02/2023: Dustin switches to TaylorMade Stealth 2 Three Wood (LIV Mayakoba)

Let's take a look what's inside Dustin Johnson's bag:

DUSTIN JOHNSON DRIVER

TAYLORMADE Qi10 (10.5°)

Dustin Johnson was an early adopter of TaylorMade’s Qi10 driver and after notching an early season in Vegas, it looks like it’s a keeper.

DJ made the switch to the mid-launch/mid-spin Qi10 driver after a couple of years using TaylorMade’s Stealth 2 Plus driver.

The design of the QI10 seems perfectly suited to Dustin Johnson tee ball game. The Qi10’s carbon fibre face is the fastest in the game, with an enormous sweet spot able to maintain ball speed from every part of the face.

But it is the Qi10’s record-breaking forgiveness that really sets it apart. DJ’s Qi10 isn’t as forgiving as the Qi10 Max driver but with an MOI around 8500, it’s the most stable low spin driver TaylorMade have ever produced.

An carbon fibre infinity crown does much of the heavy lifting, shifting weight low in the head to increase forgiveness. The Qi10 offers DJ a penetrating mid-launch trajectory off the tee, helping him maximise his distance off the tee.

TaylorMade Stealth Plus Driver

OLD DRIVER: TAYLORMADE STEALTH PLUS+ (10.5°)

For a long hitter like DJ, the TaylorMade Stealth Plus+ driver is right in his wheelhouse. While he is yet to play the newer Stealth 2 driver, the big drawcard for Stealth Plus is its carbon fibre face.

Comprisedof 60 layers of carbon fibre and bound with a nanotexture coating, the face is 44 per cent lighter than titanium and minimises energy wastage at impact.

The result is more ball speed and extra distance, which Big Dusty laps up off the tee. The Stealth Plus+ is also more forgiving and consistent, with off-centre strikes travelling further and straighter and spin rates reliably even in both damp and dry conditions.

And importantly for a feel player like DJ, TaylorMade spent considerable time tuning the impact acoustics of the carbon fibre face to make the Stealth Plus+ driver sound and feel exceptional.

A Fujikura Speeder 661 X prototype shaft is the perfect foil for Dustin Johnson’s immense speed and power with the driver.

DUSTIN JOHNSON FAIRWAY WOODS

DJ made the upgrade to the new TaylorMade Qi10 fairway in his three wood but sticks with the older model Stealth in his higher lofted fairway woods. He has opted for the larger-headed standard Qi10 fairway, rather than the more compact Qi10 Tour, likely due to his preference for a higher launching ball flight.

The TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood features a 190cc head, V Steel sole and a lightweight carbon fibre crown to create long and high-launching ball flights. Meanwhile, DJ’s TaylorMade Stealth seven wood and nine wood, a rare sight in a pro's bag, provide an effective distance gap filler between his 3 wood and 4 iron. DJ has LA Golf shafts matched to all his fairway woods.

DUSTIN JOHNSON IRONS

TAYLORMADE P730 IRONS – DJ PROTOTYPE (4-PW)

It makes perfect sense that Dustin has a full set of TaylorMade P730 irons in his bag; after all, they’re designed for the best ball strikers in the game. His irons are traditional forged blades that offer supreme feedback and feel but you have to find the sweet spot consistently – something Big Dusty does almost automatically.

Dustin’s P730 prototypes, fitted with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts, were the inspiration behind the new TaylorMade P7MB irons, which have now replaced the P730 model.

DUSTIN JOHNSON WEDGES

TAYLORMADE MILLED GRIND 4 WEDGES (52˚,60˚)

When you drive the ball as close to the green as Dustin Johnson does, your wedges are going to get a serious workout.

Dustin switched from the original TaylorMade Milled Grind wedge to the latest Milled Grind 4 wedge in 2024. His 52˚ and 60˚ MG4 wedges feature TaylorMade’s unique milling process that creates precision consistency on the sole grinds and sharp grooves for spin and control.

DUSTIN JOHNSON PUTTER

L.A.B. GOLF DF3

After playing a TaylorMade Spider Tour V putter for most of 2024, Dustin Johnson switched to a L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter for his final event of the year at the LIV Teams Championship.

The L.A.B. Golf DF3 is a high MOI mallet that is designed to stay square on its own (L.A.B. stands for lie angle balanced and the DF stands for directed force). The zero torque mallet is also extremely forgiving.

PREVIOUS PUTTER: TAYLORMADE SPIDER TOUR V PUTTER

Dustin has long been a TaylorMade Spider guy and in 2024 he’s using the Tour V Spider model.

It’s the most compact model in the 2023 Spider line-up and its modern appearance is framed by the complete absence of any Spider-like wings.

It’s ultra-forgiving for off-centre strikes and a pair of sole weights on the heel and toe encourages the most face rotation of the 2023 Spider putters.

DJ has a small slant hosel fitted to his Spider Tour V putter, which also helps the face rotate open and closed throughout the stroke.

DUSTIN JOHNSON GOLF BALL

TAYLORMADE 2024 TP5X GOLF BALL

The TaylorMade TP5X ball is slightly firmer than the TP5 and is perfectly suited to Dustin’s game. It is designed to complement high-swing speeds by lowering spin rates for the driver, creating a more penetrating ball flight.

And full iron shots launch higher and have a steeper descent angle with the TP5X, which is an ideal trait when Dustin is spearing his P730 long irons into the green.
