NEW Odyssey Ai-ONE Putters
Posted by GolfBox on 8th Feb 2024
The A.I. revolution that has swept through golf club design in the past few years has, by and large, sidestepped the putter category.
Until now.
It may not come as a great surprise that Odyssey, inventors of the truly pioneering White Hot face insert and ground-breaking 2-Ball putter, are among the first to dive headlong into the world of A.I. designed putters.
Odyssey’s new Ai-One putters feature face technology conceived by artificial intelligence. Much like A.I. designed drivers and irons, the payoff is more consistent ball speeds off the putter face, particularly from off-centre strikes.
And when your Ai-One putter gets red hot, courtesy of some A.I. inspiration, well might you ask: “what took Odyssey so long?”
THE Ai WINDOW
Odyssey obviously believe it’s not bragging if you can back it up, which is why they’ve included a transparent polymer window on their Ai-One putters (although not on the Milled models).
The see-through window, located on the rear of the face on blade putters and on the sole of mallets, reveals the insert architecture in all its glory.
While the A.I-design does look kind of like a mini version of Jailbreak, Odyssey are confident the cut-through will concisely explain what artificial intelligence looks like in putter design.
Clearly, Odyssey are banking on the fact that seeing is believing.
THREE DIFFERENT MODELS
To accommodate all flatstick connoisseurs, Odyssey offer the Ai-One putter range in three distinct styles: Ai-One Milled, Ai-One and Ai-One Cruiser.
The Ai-One Milled range offers the precision and inimitable feel of milled construction in both the head and insert.
The eight-strong collection of blades and mallets features milled stainless-steel heads along with an A.I.-designed milled titanium insert.
The regular Ai-One putters feature a selection of cast blades and mallets fitted with an A.I.-inspired version of the White Hot insert.
The Ai-One Cruiser line-up is similar but features heavier heads, longer shafts and purpose-built lie angles to assist non-conventional putting styles, such as the armlock or broomstick method.
Ai-ONE INSERTS
For those playing along at home, you’ll notice the Odyssey Ai-One putter range features two different inserts.
The regular Ai-One insert is a bit of a White Hot clone. A.I.-inspired topology on the rear of the aluminium insert is integrated with the trademark white urethane on the hitting surface, producing a soft yet solid feel.
Meanwhile, the insert on Ai-One Milled putters is noticeably different on the outside.
It’s constructed from an eye-catching copper-coloured titanium and has an intricate oval-shaped pattern milled across the hitting surface, offering a responsive feel unique to milled putters.
Although you can’t see it (the Milled range doesn’t have a viewing window like the rest of the Ai-One range), Odyssey’s A.I. architecture is still quietly doing its best work at the back of the Milled face.
NEW ODYSSEY STROKE LAB SHAFT
Odyssey’s multi material Stroke Lab shaft has been a phenomenal success ever since making its debut in 2019. The entire Ai-One range is fitted with a Stroke Lab shaft, but it might not immediately be apparent. You see, the distinctive two-tone colour scheme of the original multi-material (graphite and steel) Stroke Lab shaft is no more.
It’s been replaced by a simpler, lightweight steel shaft that is counterbalanced by 20-30g of weight in the grip end of the shaft — a configuration Odyssey believe will suit a much wider range of golfers.
Ai-One and Ai-One Milled putters are fitted with a Stroke Lab 90 shaft while the Ai-One Cruiser range features a heavier Stroke Lab 140 or 200 shaft, depending on the model.
NAVY BLUE FINISH
The entire Ai-One putting range looks resplendent with an opulent navy blue PVD finish. But Odyssey have opted for a little game of spot-the-difference between the models.
Ai-One and Ai-One Cruiser putters both feature a traditional navy blue. But the Milled models are finished in a much darker hue of navy blue which, at certain angles, almost looks black.
