Phil Mickelson What's in the Bag? (2024)
Posted by GolfBox on 28th Nov 2024
Phil Mickelson is unquestionably one of the most naturally gifted golfers of all time, blessed with a classic swing and a short game that has all the shots. His win at the 2021 US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island was one for the ages – literally - as 50-year-old Mickelson beat a world-class field on the then longest course in major history.
In 2022, Phil Mickelson joined the LIV Tour where he leads his HyFlyers team from the front and displays his incomparable touch and imagination. The HyFlyers finished 12th in the LIV Team standings in 2024.
What clubs does Phil Mickelson use?
WITB UPDATE 28/11/2024: Phil plays Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke driver, PING G430 MAX fairway wood, PING Anser hybrid, Callaway X Forged irons, Callaway JAWS Raw wedges and L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter.
WITB UPDATE 07/10/2021: Phil has added the Callaway APEX UW to his bag
WITB UPDATE 17/06/2021: Phil updated his fairway to TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver (US Open Championship)
Let's take a look what's inside Phil Mickelson’s bag:
Phil Mickelson Driver
CALLAWAY PARADYM Ai SMOKE TRIPLE DIAMOND (9°)
Phil’s never really been a model of consistency off the tee throughout his career but his Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond driver is designed to make his misses much more palatable.
With its lightweight Paradym carbon fibre chassis, which has been strengthened in the Ai Smoke with the presence of some aluminium support structures, Phil is able to gain extra club head speed with his driver.
But it’s the Ai Smoke’s face where the magic really happens. After mapping the impact zones of thousands of golfers, Callaway called up their A.I. supercomputer to create a face featuring pockets of forgiveness where golfers actually need it.
Phil plays the Triple Diamond model of the Ai Smoke driver, its 450cc head making it the most compact of the four Ai Smoke drivers. It is also offers low-spin, low-launch characteristics that help Phil hit bombs off the tee while maintaining control over his shape and flight.
Phil has a Fujikura Ventus Blue 6 X shaft fitted to his Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond driver.
OLD DRIVER: CALLAWAY EPIC SPEED (Custom 6° loft)
A big key to Phil’s success at Kiawah Island, the longest course in major history, was his performance off the tee.
He hit the longest drive of the tournament on the 16th in the final round, a 366-yard bomb that was no doubt powered by a rush of adrenaline to some degree.
His left-handed Callaway Epic Speed driver is custom built, with its cyclone head shape and extra-long shaft helping him gain more clubhead speed.
And when you add in the Epic Speed’s AI-designed face, which increases ball speed across all areas of the face, it makes it easy for Phil to keep up with the younger players off the tee.
With only 6° of loft and a second weight added to the front to reduce spin, Phil’s prototype Epic Speed is almost in long-driver contest specs.
Lefty uses a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft that is 47.9 inches long, which just sneaks under the 48-inch limit.
Phil Mickelson Fairway Woods
PING G430 MAX (3W, 15°), CALLAWAY MAVRIK SUB ZERO (4W, 16.5°)
Phil is the ultimate tinkerer, rotating clubs through his bag with regularity to suit the course conditions.
Phil is currently playing a PING G430 Max three wood that he uses both off the tee and from the fairway. The Max is the most forgiving fairway wood in the G430 range and its carbon fibre crown — known as a ‘CarbonFly Wrap’ in PING’s terminology — saves weight from up high to be repurposed low and back in the club head, promoting a lower centre of gravity for an effortless launch.
Meanwhile, Phil’s four wood is a Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero. Phil uses it to flight shots high into the greens but also launches it off the tee when he needs a fairway finder. Callaway’s Mavrik Sub Zero is the low-spin model designed to accommodate high swing speeds. It has since been superseded by Callaway’s Paradym Ai Smoke fairway woods.
TAYLORMADE 300 MINI DRIVER (13.5°)
hil masterfully controlled the fairway woods he used at Kiawah Island, but he doesn’t mind rotating them in and out of his bag to suit the course he’s playing.
He upgraded to the recently released at the US Open at Torrey Pines after previously using TaylorMade’s Original Mini Driver, a club first introduced in 2019.
The new 300 Mini Driver has a small head (307cc) and 13.5° of loft (plus 2° of hosel adjustment), offering performance characteristics similar to a two wood.
With mid-launch/low-spin characteristics, it’s a go-to club when Phil needs to find a tight fairway off the tee.
And with TaylorMade’s Thru-slot pocket on the sole, Phil can reliably rip one off the deck given the forgiveness it affords strikes low on the face.
Phil has a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft fitted to the club.
WITB UPDATE 07/10/2021: Phil plays the new Callaway Apex UW (Utility Wood) a club that was created using his very own input to perform a specific task.
Phil has never been a hybrid kind of guy but the Apex UW is a gap-filling club designed to slot in anywhere between a 3-wood and 4-iron.
It unites the best aspects of higher lofted fairways and a hybrid. But critically for Phil, it offers a greater peak height and sharper descent angle and allows him to play a variety of shots – from rough, fairway or tee - due to its unwavering spin, flight and distance consistency.
The Callaway Apex UW features the AI-designed SS21 Flash Face that is used in Callaway’s Epic Speed drivers and fairways as well as twin Jailbreak Velocity blades, which stiffen the club head and elevate face flexibility.
CALLAWAY APEX UW (17°)
TAYLORMADE ORIGINAL ONE MINI DRIVER (2W – 11.5°)
Previously in his bag was a TaylorMade two wood – an Original Mini driver that was introduced in 2019.
With Phil contractually obliged to Callaway, he tried his best to remove any identifying features. But with its small head and driver-like performance it is clearly a club that clicks with his swing.
Phil Mickelson Hybrid
PING ANSER (17°)
Phil sometimes carries a PING Anser hybrid in his bag, a club that was released in 2015.
It’s a traditionally shaped hybrid that produces a high trajectory, which is perfect for those famous soft-landing spoon-ups that Phil plays with remarkable consistency.
His PING Anser hybrid, which is fitted with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 90X shaft, has been replaced by the new PING G430 hybrid.
Phil Mickelson Irons
CALLAWAY X FORGED 2013 (6-9), CALLAWAY ROGUE ST Pro (5)
Phil plays Callaway X Forged irons in his 6 to PW and they are a bit of a throwback.
They are player’s irons that were released in 2013 and they combine a soft and pure feel with the ability to shape and flight shots.
X Forged irons have since been replaced by Callaway Apex CB irons.
Lefty uses graphite Mitsubishi MMT 115 TX shafts in his X Forged irons.
Meanwhile, the Callaway Rogue ST Pro iron Phil employs as his five iron blurs the line between player’s iron and game improvement iron.
It features a compact head shape but its hollow body filled with tungsten creates powerful distance and maximum speed across the entire club face.
A KBS Tour V 125 S+ shaft is fitted to Phil’s Callaway Rogue ST Pro five iron.
Phil Mickelson Wedges
CALLAWAY JAWS RAW (50°), CALLAWAY MACK DADDY PM GRIND (60°, 64°)
Phil did have his own line of Callaway wedges so it’s little surprise to see a few of them bob up in his bag.
Callaway PM Grind 60° and 64° wedges are made to Phil’s exact specs, with a high toe and a large face that has grooves extended all the way to the edge.
Phil has a little extra offset in his PM Grind wedges, to allow his hands to stay ahead of the ball to play perfect knockdown shots, while the sole grind allows him to play his famous flop shots, with relief taken out of the heel and toe areas.
A Callaway JAWS Raw wedge is Phil’s choice for his 50° wedge. Its JAWS groove technology is the sharpest in the game to provide the most bite and spin on the greens and the raw finish rusts to provide extra grip on the face in between the grooves.
Callaway's new Opus wedge has replaced the JAWS Raw wedge.
A Mitsubishi MMT 115 TX graphite shaft is installed on all three of Phil’s wedges.
Phil Mickelson Putter
L.A.B. GOLF DF3
After sticking with a simple Odyssey ‘Phil’ prototype blade putter for much of his decorated career, Phil has taken a big U-turn with his current putter.
It’s a L.A.B. golf DF3 putter, a huge mallet that looks, well, quite weird.
The DF3’s distinctive rear section is unmissable but L.A.B. putters are designed to make putting easier.
The DF3 is a torqueless, or Lie Angle Balanced (L.A.B.), putter, which means it squares itself to the arc of a putting stroke. It is particularly well suited to players such as Phil who have little rotation of the putter head in their stroke.
OLD PUTTER: ODYSSEY PHIL MICKELSON PROTOTYPE BLADE PUTTER
Like his PM Grind wedges, Phil plays a putter that has his name stamped on it.
Phil has stuck with blade putters for much of his career and his current Odyssey milled “Phil Mickelson” blade putter continues the theme.
His prototype features a White Hot OG insert, heel shafted design and a SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour grip.
While Phil’s putter currently is only a prototype, Odyssey’s new White Hot OG range offers plenty of choice for players hoping to putt like Phil.
Phil Mickelson Ball
CALLAWAY CHROME TOUR X TRIPLE TRACK
The X is the higher compression model of Callaway’s Chrome Tour ball range, which clearly suits Phil’s game.
It is designed for low-spin distance for high-speed swings and offers greater workability and a slightly firmer feel than the standard Chrome Tour.
Callaway’s triple track system – a trio of alignment lines printed on the cover of the ball – aids Phil’s aim and alignment.
