PING G440 Irons (2025)
Posted by GolfBox on 14th Jan 2025
There’s no doubt PING’s new G440 game improvement irons are designed to maximise distance. But PING were determined to not just stop there.
They decided to take a holistic approach by asking “why don’t we make the G440 iron launch higher, stop quicker and look better?”
Hence the new PING G440 iron doesn’t really look like your traditional “frying pan” distance iron. It looks almost like a player’s iron, with a shorter blade length and thinner top line compared to the PING G430 iron.
But lift the bonnet and you’ll understand why PING do distance differently. And it’s not just loft jacking BTW…
LIGHTER, THINNER AND SHALLOWER
Shallowing the G440 iron face meant PING could also make it thinner. It functions much like metal wood face, with the thinned-out face flexing and rebounding more to create faster ball speeds.
PING’s PurFlex badge in the rear cavity provides the structural support for the thinner G440 iron face. But it is also more flexible too. It’s a contributor to the ball speed gains of the G440 irons and also enhances the feel and impact sound.
Meanwhile, the slimmer topline of the G440 irons saved 4g of weight, which PING have redeployed lower and further back in the head. It shifts the irons’ centre of gravity lower to increase ball speed and elevate forgiveness.
PING G440 WEDGES
PING rejigged the wedges for the G440 iron line-up with the objective of simplifying distance gapping and choice.
There were five wedges in the G430 iron (PW, 45°, 50°, 54°, 58°) but the PING G440 iron line-up removes one and reorganises lofts to cover the bases (PW, UW, 52°, 56°). The 56° G440 wedge features the classic EYE2 sand wedge profile, with its sole, bounce and hosel designed to help any skill level get out the bunkers with ease.
At the other end of the PING G440 iron set, the 4-6 irons are equipped with slightly longer shafts. PING are confident it will create more speed and distance, help the irons launch higher and create more consistent distance gaps in the set.
PING G440 IRONS
Stainless-steel distance irons never looked like this! PING G440 irons are longer, more forgiving yet feature a more compact player’s iron style of shaping. A thinner, more flexible face, tungsten weighting and a lower CG all contribute to high-launching distance — while also creating a steeper descent angle to increase stopping power on the greens.
