TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver
Posted by GolfBox on 26th Apr 2023
In the driver category, size used to matter. But there might be a Mini revolution brewing.
The new TaylorMade BRNR Mini driver hits the shelves this April and it’ll rev your engine if you cling on to treasured memories of smaller-headed drivers.
The BRNR Mini is the latest club to join the Burner family - a revered name that TaylorMade is leveraging to win hearts and minds - and its translucent copper colouring and retro decals recall, specifically, the Ti Bubble 2 driver of the late 1990s.
Nineties culture is cool again but where does a club that evokes a bygone era fit in today’s supercharged distance game?
LITTLE WONDER
Apart from an obvious sense of nostalgia, why would you want to play a big dog the size of a chihuahua?
There are a couple of practical reasons.
The BRNR Mini is much easier to hit off the deck than a 460cc driver, offering players a club that extends their range from the fairway.
And off the tee, the BRNR Mini will give players greater bandwidth to shape shots.
Its dual persona points to the versatility of the BRNR Mini and it’s an obvious selling point for the driver.
But TaylorMade’s adjustable loft sleeve has, arguably, never played a more purposeful role than it does on the BRNR Mini.
The Mini driver has fairly weak lofts of 11.5° and 13.5° but the loft sleeve permits a huge 4° range of adjustment (2° up or down).
And that’s more than enough to transform the BRNR into either a low lofted driver off the tee or a higher lofted “two wood” for extra firepower on the fairways — ultimately, you can choose its identity.
BRNR MINI: A FAIRLY BIG MINI DRIVER
The new BRNR Mini driver is a follow-up to TaylorMade’s 300 Mini driver that was released in 2021.
At 307cc, the 300 Mini was not all that mini in comparison to TaylorMade’s previous efforts, which clocked in between 250-275cc.
The new BRNR Mini is again on the brawnier side with a 304cc head.
But there is some logic to the “larger” mini sizing this time — the BRNR is the first Mini driver to feature movable weighting for adjustable flight bias.
Front and rear sole weights are fitted with standard 13g and 1.5g weights.
With the heavier weight sitting in the back, the BRNR Mini launches higher, spins more and offers more forgiveness; swapping the 13g weight to the front produces a lower spinning, more penetrating ball flight that should result in extra run on the fairway.
While retro symbolism abounds in the BRNR Mini, it’s important to note the club incorporates much of the technology TaylorMade currently uses in their other metal/carbon wood lines.
There’s the ubiquitous titanium Twist Face (like that used on TaylorMade’s current Stealth 2 fairways), a lightweight carbon fibre crown, and a Speed Pocket on the sole that assists low strikes on the face.
K-SOLE
The unique K-Sole was a defining characteristic of the early TaylorMade Burner drivers and an updated version of it has been resurrected for the BRNR Mini driver.
The K-sole is a major reason the BRNR Mini is so capable when in “driver off the deck” mode.
The design allows the head to glide through the turf with minimal resistance, replicating the effectiveness of higher lofted fairway woods.
IS THE FUTURE MINI?
TaylorMade are clear leaders in the small-headed driver category.
In fact, there’s daylight to second because TaylorMade are the sole protagonists in the class.
Mini drivers remain a niche product and the apathy from other manufacturers may lead to the conclusion that golfers aren’t the least bit nostalgic.
But could the retro cool and effectiveness of the BRNR Mini be the catalyst for a Mini driver revolution?
Time will tell. But for now, the BRNR Mini is your best - and only - option.
The BRNR Mini's also features a reversible head cover that is impossible to ignore, its business-like black leather and copper outside can be reversed into a rainbow-banded, fluffy polyester head protector.
