TaylorMade M5

The new TaylorMade M5 and M6 fairway woods have been given the Twist Face treatment, the first time the breakthrough technology has been applied in a fairway wood.

However, it wasn’t as easy as just bolting the Twist Face used in TaylorMade drivers on to the new M5 and M6 fairway woods.

With the smaller head geometry of a fairway wood, TaylorMade spent countless hours studying thousands of fairway wood strikes to determine how best to tweak Twist Face so it could do what it does best: straighten up heel and toe strikes by adding loft in the toe and decreasing it in the heel.

The heads of the M5 and M6 fairway woods have been designed to maximise the effectiveness of the Twist Face while also creating extra distance for shots out of the sweet spot.

And the hard work has paid off because the new TaylorMade M5 and M6 fairway woods will be a welcome addition to every golfer’s bag.

TAYLORMADE M5 FAIRWAY WOOD

Twist Face is the big ticket innovation, but the TaylorMade M5 fairway wood, like its driver namesake, features a sliding weight on the sole that creates ball shaping options.

With 65g of weight to manoeuvre, draws and fades are easily achieved given the sliding steel weight comprises over 30 per cent of the total head weight of the M5 fairway wood.

The head of the new TaylorMade M5 fairway wood is a combination of steel, carbon fibre and titanium and, with the lighter carbon fibre and titanium being used in the crown and body respectively, more weight could be concentrated where it is of most use: low and rearward for an improved centre of gravity (CG).

And a lower CG means the M5 fairway wood has a higher launch and lower-spinning ball flight than the M3 fairway wood it is replacing, with extra distance the upshot.

The contoured sole has been redesigned, improving the M5 fairway wood’s performance through the turf at impact no matter what position the adjustable weight is in.

And TaylorMade's loft sleeve gets a berth on the M5 fairway wood, which enables loft adjustments up to 2 degrees up or down without affecting the M5’s lie angle.

The Mitsubishi CK Tensei Orange range of shafts are the standard offerings on the M5 fairway wood, but other shaft options can be selected and fitted free of charge.

A low-spin 14 degree three wood, a standard 15 degree three wood and an 18 degree five wood are the options in the M5 fairway wood range.

TAYLORMADE M6 FAIRWAY WOOD

With Twist Face and a new Speed Pocket on the sole, the TaylorMade M6 fairway wood replaces the M4 and offers unparalleled forgiveness.

The re-engineered Speed Pocket is more flexible and elevates the M6’s coefficient of restitution (COR) to boost ball speeds, particularly for strikes that come out low on the face.

A bigger carbon crown and a taller and deeper face, compared to the M5, adds to the TaylorMade M6’s playability and will inspire confidence from both the tee and off the turf.

The M6’s CG has also been tinkered with to create high launch, but TaylorMade have managed to maintain the forgiveness that separates the M6 from the M5 by still maintaining a high MOI (moment of inertia).

A wide range of lofts makes the M6 fairway wood range very versatile, with three wood lofts of 14 and 15 degrees, an 18 degree five wood, a 21 degree seven wood and a 24 degree nine wood, which are all fitted with a Fujikura Atmos Orange FW shaft.

TAYLORMADE M6 D-TYPE FAIRWAY WOOD

An M6 D-Type fairway wood with Twist Face is also available, producing a drawing ball flight through a variation to the inner weighting, which helps close the clubface.

Revised crown graphics, which are slightly offset, also assist with a draw flight by deceiving the eye into a quicker release of the M6 D-Type fairway wood’s clubhead.

The M6 D-Type fairway wood is offered in a 16 degree three wood, 19 degree five wood and 22 degree seven wood and has a Project X EvenFlow Max Carry shaft that also helps achieve a drawing ball flight.

TAYLORMADE M6 RESCUE

Reflecting the changes in the fairway woods, the new  TaylorMade M6 rescue is the first time Twist Face technology has been applied in a rescue club.

The M6 rescue is the longest hybrid ever made by TaylorMade and is also the most adaptable, with a men’s M6 rescue offering five different lofts (19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 degrees) and a women’s M6 rescue presenting four lofts (22, 25, 28, 31 degrees).

The curved Twist Face was more evident in the smaller face of the steel-bodied M6 rescue compared to a bigger driver or fairway wood so to get around it, TaylorMade have altered the multi-tone crown visuals on the M6 rescue to make the Twist Face less noticeable to the eye.

A stepped crown helps to align the M6 rescue while also lowering the CG which, together with a faster face, boosts ball speeds and distances to levels never achieved in a TaylorMade rescue.

The sole of the M6 rescue adopts the more flexible Speed Pocket that features on the M6 fairway wood and produces similar performance by enlarging the COR across the M6 rescue’s face and boosting the performance of strikes that aren’t out of the centre, in particular strikes that are low on the face.

The men’s M6 rescue is appointed with a Fujikura Atmos Orange HY shaft while the women’s M6 gets the TaylorMade Tuned Performance shaft.

The TaylorMade M5, M6 and M6 D-Type fairway woods, and the TaylorMade M6 rescue, are all now available for sale at GolfBox.
