TaylorMade P770, P7MB & P7MC Irons (NEW 2023)
Posted by GolfBox on 6th Dec 2022
For those golfers who have worked themselves into a bit of a tiz in anticipation of demoing TaylorMade’s new P700 iron range, it’s finally time to wipe the sweat off the brow, sit down and relax, and enjoy what we’re about to divulge.
TaylorMade’s new P770, P7MB and P7MC irons have arrived but before we start a deep dive into the new tech and performance enhancements, we’d like to provide our uncensored, no-holds-barred first impression:
Daaaaannnng, those are some seriously sexy irons.
With that out of the way, we should note the preceding P700 iron series will be one tough act to follow.
WHAT’S NEW IN TAYLORMADE P700 IRONS?
When the previous P700 family hit the market over two years ago, two new players’ models – the P7MC and P7MB - joined the fray, while the P770 was reborn as a distance iron closely aligned with the P790 powerhouse.
This time around, it’s been more of a refinement than a refresh, with all three current models continuing on after receiving some significant revisions.
While cosmetic transformation has enhanced the breathtaking sexiness of the new P700 iron family, a suite of internal enhancements means performance goes far beyond just their exquisitely attractive exterior.
The updates have boosted performance across all three models without impeding the very attributes that have made the P700 iron family so universally popular.
And the versatility to combine all three iron models into one seamless set continues.
Encompassing the spectrum between emerging and improving players (P770), elite tour-level ball strikers (P7MB) and those somewhere in between (P7MC), the flagship 2022 P700 range is once again one very happy family.
TAYLORMADE P770 IRONS
If ever there was a player’s-distance iron that epitomises the category, the new P770 would be a near perfect example.
A hollow-bodied forged iron, the P770 iron combines vast reserves of forgiveness with huge amounts of distance-melting pop off the face.
But in keeping with its players’ iron lineage, the P770 features a refined aesthetic profile that is characterised by clean lines, a thin topline and a shorter blade length than the P790 iron it shares much of its tech with.
All those elements make the P770 tuned for workability and flight control.
Unlike its P7MB and P7MC siblings, the P770’s 8620 carbon body and thin forged steel face conceal a multitude of tech within.
A progressive tungsten weighting system, known as FLTD CG, optimises the centre of gravity for each iron in the set.
FLTD CG sees up to 46g of high-density tungsten deployed low in the longer irons and high in the short irons to improve launch and playability; the long irons launch higher and travel further while the short irons spin more to provide greater control in the scoring part of the set.
On the sole is TaylorMade’s Thru-Slot Speed Pocket, which boosts face flexibility in the 3-7 irons, maximising performance on those shots that come out a few grooves too low off the face.
But no TaylorMade hollow-bodied iron would be complete without a dose of vibration-damping, feel-inducing SpeedFoam in the cavity.
And it’s a new and improved SpeedFoam too: 69 per cent less dense than the original, allowing mass to be spread to more advantageous areas of the head.
The P770 package bridges the gap between distance and playability rather effortlessly and will be a popular choice for improving players who seek the best of both worlds.

TAYLORMADE P7MB IRONS
Golfers often get all weak-kneed at the sight of a shiny set of muscleback blades.
Nothing is quite as sexy as a blade. But describing the new TaylorMade P7MB blades as merely ‘sexy’ really ain’t doing them justice.
The P7MB is popular with TaylorMade’s tour staff. You know, some of the top ball strikers in the world.
Clubs designed to provide the world’s top players with comprehensive workability inevitably causes issues for less skilled golfers because forgiving they are not.
But the feedback, feel and purity of strike mean blades remain the dream for many golfers, even though, realistically, it should probably remain an unattainable dream at that.
The new 2022 TaylorMade P7MB (muscleback) irons feature much of the timeless elegance of their predecessors but there has been even greater involvement in the design courtesy of TaylorMade’s tour staff.
What’s that look like?
The new P7MB features an even shorter blade length, a narrower sole width and a progressive offset design (even labelling it offset is a stretch given how insignificant it is).
And the rear bar is now symmetrical, giving it a squared-off appearance at address and greater stability at impact.
TaylorMade use a 5x forging technique to straighten and tighten the grain of the 1025 steel the P7MBs are forged from, delivering impeccable feel off the face, while aggressive score lines are machined into the face for precise spin and control.
If all that sounds a bit challenging, consider P7MC or P770 irons.
But hey, there’s no harm in looking, right?

What do you get when you cross a new TaylorMade P770 with a new TaylorMade P7MB?
If you guessed the new P7MC you’re… close.
Cross-breeding chunks of metal will never produce anything but performance-wise, the new P7MC (muscle cavity) is a fairly balanced blend of the slightly more distance and forgiveness-geared P770 and the forthright workability and feel of the thoroughbred P7MB.
Like the new P7MB blades, TaylorMade’s tour staff were engaged for their input into the design of the new P7MC.
Thinner toplines, and a more progressive offset (falling somewhere between the more significant offset of the P770 and the almost negligible offset of the P7MB) are hallmarks of the new P7MC.
But the perimeter weighting of the P7MC provides just the right amount of forgiveness, without affecting the renowned, 5x forged, tour-level feel.
Incorporating the cavity back into the P7MC design is an insurance policy against those slightly off-centre strikes.
P7MC irons feature the same precision scored groove pattern as their P7MB siblings, providing complete consistency for reliable shot making and flight workability.
The P7MC iron will be a popular choice, including as a long iron option across a split set.
