Cameron Smith What's in the Bag? (2024)

Posted by GolfBox on 5th Aug 2024

Owner of the most gnarly haircut in golf, Cameron Smith is one of the most watchable golfers in the game. The larrikin Aussie with the filthy mullet has been on a red-hot tear the last few years.

In January 2022, Smith became a record breaker when he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions, his winning total of 34-under the lowest score ever in PGA Tour history then claimed the 2022 Players Championship (Mar 10–14, 2022).

A few months later, Cam broke through for his first major win at The Open Championship at St Andrews (July 14-17, 2022) when he shot a brilliant 8-under 64 in the final round to beat Cameron Young by a shot, with Rory McIlroy a further stroke back.

A switch to the LIV Tour netted another win in Chicago and notched his fifth victory of the year at the Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland (Nov 23–27, 2022). In 2023, Cam won the LIV London event in July before following it up with a seven-shot romp to win at LIV Bedminster (Aug 11-13) in New Jersey.

Captain of Rippers GC on the LIV tour, Cam achieved a teams win on home soil at LIV Adelaide (April 26-28, 2024) .

Let's take a look what's inside Cameron Smith’s bag:

CAMERON SMITH DRIVER

Titleist GT3 Driver

TITLEIST GT3 DRIVER (10°)

Cam was one of the first players to add Titleist’s new GT3 driver to his bag for the Open Championship at Royal Troon. The Titleist GT3 driver offers a combination of speed and stability, helping Cam gain distance off the tee and find more fairways, particularly from toe and heel strikes.

Titleist’s revised Surefit CG track features on the sole and offers a draw or fade bias across its five slots (Cam has his set in the neutral position so he can shape it both ways off the tee). Cam has a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 6 X shaft paired with his GT3 driver.

PREVIOUS DRIVER: TITLEIST TSR3 (10°)

Cameron Smith picked the Old Course apart with his new Titleist TSR3 driver, which provides speed and stability together with flight tuning.

The TSR3’s pear-shaped head and a new ‘boat tail’ configuration enhances performance aerodynamically, which boosts club head speed for extra distance. A new Speed Ring face topography is designed to increase ball velocity out of the TSR3’s sweet spot, but even Cam’s mis-hits are faster, longer and straighter than his previous TSi3 driver.

The TSR3 features a Surefit CG track, with an 8g rear weight creating a draw or fade bias in each of the five different positions (Cam has his set in the neutral position so he can shape it both ways).

CAMERON SMITH FAIRWAY WOODS

PING G430 MAX FAIRWAY WOOD(3W - 15°)

WITB UPDATE 14/08/2023: Cam’s PING G430 MAX three wood is the only non-Titleist club in his bag, replacing his previous TSR2 fairway wood.

The G430 MAX is the most forgiving of the four G430 fairway woods, with a tungsten rear perimeter weight and carbonfly crown offering Cam superb low-spinning, high-launching performance.

Cam’s PING G430 MAX three wood is fitted with a Fujikura Ventus TR Red 7 X shaft.

TITLEIST TS2 (7W - 21˚)

Cam switched back to the older TS2 model seven wood from the TSi model and it’s a dependable club.

The TS2’s larger head and deeper face is a perfect fit for Cam’s game and he uses it regularly out of the rough, especially when the ball is sitting low.

CAMERON SMITH UTILITY IRONS

Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi (#3)

Cameron also switches a Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi three iron into the top end of his bag.

The Mizuno Pro Fli-Hi is a long iron replacement and features a MAS1C maraging steel face – the same one used in Mizuno’s fairway woods – and a 21g tungsten weight that shifts the CG low.

That combination creates fast ball speeds and a high launch angle off the face, but unlike hybrids and rescues, the Fli-Hi 3 iron has a more traditional compact head shape and size that helps Cam shape long approaches into greens or find fairways.

PREVIOUS UTILITY IRONS: TITLEIST U510 (3- 20°), TITLEIST U500 (4, 23°)

A Titleist guy through-and-through, Cam carries a couple of utility irons as replacements for the longer irons in his bag.

His U510 3-iron is a hybrid-like utility with a compact profile and wide sole. It is high-launching and super long but its place in the bag depends on the course and conditions.

Cam jumps between carrying the 3-iron and the aforementioned 7 wood, with the lower flight of the U510 3-iron often preferable in windy or soft conditions.

The U500 4-iron is more iron than hybrid and it’s a permanent fixture in Cam’s bag. It’s an ideal long iron replacement - easy to launch high with a steep descent angle for soft landings.

CAMERON SMITH IRONS

2023 TITLEIST T100 (6-9)TITLEIST T150 (5)

Cam was among the first Titleist staffers to play the new 2023 Titleist T100 irons but added a T150 iron five iron in 2024. Titleist T100 irons are authentic forged player’s irons, with a short blade length and compact profile that gives Cam the flexibility to flight and shape his irons.

Titleist T100 irons feature dual cavity via tungsten weighting that offers ultra-precise placement of the centre of gravity for each loft, maximising feel, control, spin and distance throughout the T100 set. Cam subbed his T100 five iron out in favour of a Titleist T150 iron.

The T150 has a lower centre of gravity to help Cam get the ball up in the air and stop it quicker on the greens. All of Cam’s Titleist irons are finished in black and are installed with KBS Tour 130 X Custom Matte Black shafts.

PREVIOUS IRONS: 2021 TITLEIST T100 (5-9)

Cam was among the first players to adopt the new 2021 Titleist T100 irons, which make up the remainder of the irons in his bag.

Titleist T100 irons are authentic forged player’s irons, with a short blade length and compact profile.

The 5-7 irons feature tungsten weighting in the heel and toe and a dual cavity to increase MOI, while the 8 and 9 irons are one-piece forged irons designed to maximise control and spin.

A variable bounce sole across the set improves turf interaction and feel at impact and Cam has his T100 irons finished in black.

CAMERON SMITH WEDGES

TITLEIST VOKEY SM10 (46°, 52°, 56°, 60°)

Few in the game can match Cam’s mesmerising wedge game and Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges are Cam’s tools of his trade.

Vokey SM10 wedges provide Cam with precise flighting control, a pure feel and superb stopping power — particularly out of the rough — via a progressive centre of gravity and spin milled grooves.

The Vokey SM10 range features six grind options (T,M,S,D,F,K).

Cam plays the all-purpose F grind in his 46° and 52° wedges, a mid-bounce M grind in his 56° and a low bounce T grind in his 60° SM10 wedge.

OLD WEDGES: TITLEIST VOKEY SM9 (46°, 52°, 56°, 60°)

Vokey SM9 wedges are the follow up to the previous SM8 wedges that Cam mastered and he made an immediate impression with them at his record-breaking romp in Hawaii.

The wedges feature 16 spin milled grooves (with micro grooves cut in between each one) that extend all the way to the edge, as well as a progressive CG. It’s a combination that provides maximum spin and playability and lets Cam get creative with his short game, playing the entire spectrum of shots with his SM9 quiver.

There are six different Vokey SM9 grinds (F,M,S,D,K,L) and Cam uses the all-purpose F grind in the lower lofted wedges, the versatile M in his 56˚ and the narrow S grind in his 60˚.

Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges

PREVIOUS WEDGES: TITLEIST VOKEY SM8 (46°, 52°, 56°, 60°)

Not many players can match Cam’s wedge mastery and short game finesse, which is a major reason the mullet has been getting so much airtime of late.

Cam’s eclectic collection of Vokey wedges enables him to play every shot in the book, from full pitches, open-faced flops, bunker blasts and chip-and-runs.

He uses his 46° Vokey wedge as his pitching wedge while the 52°, 56° and 60° (in three different grinds) offer the feel and performance for delicate greenside shots.

Vokey SM8 wedges have a progressive CG that improves distance and trajectory control while the grooves are cut right to the edge to maximise spin and control.

Cam’s wedge line-up has a variety of grind and bounce combinations to choose from, so he decides early in the week of a tournament which ones he’ll use, after assessing the grass, bunker sand and firmness of the course.

CAMERON SMITH PUTTER

SCOTTY CAMERON 009M PROTOTYPE

Cam’s Scotty Cameron Newport 009 prototype putter matches the rest of his set, finished in his preferred black.

The Newport 009M is Cam’s very own tour-only model, which is a close relation to the Scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter.

The Newport 2 is a classic flat-stick with an L-shaped hosel and features screw weighting on the back cavity and a tungsten-balanced sole.

CAMERON SMITH GOLF BALL

2023 TITLEIST PRO V1X

The new 2023 Titleist Pro V1x gives Cam Smith a marginally higher ball flight and extra spin compared to the Pro V1.

He immediately put the new ball into play when it was released last year and hasn’t looked back - the sticky cover gives him extra control and spin around the greens without changing his distances he hits his irons.
