Collin Morikawa What's in the Bag? (2024)
Posted by GolfBox on 29th Aug 2024
Collin Morikawa is regarded as one of the best iron players in the game and with two majors to his name so far, seems destined for a Hall of Fame career. Morikawa well and truly proved his maiden 2020 US PGA Championship victory was no fluke after a stunning performance to win the 2021 British Open Championship, his second major win from just eight attempts at only 24 years of age.
The American endured a two-year winning drought after winning the Open Championship before finally breaking through at the 2023 ZOZO Championship in Japan. It was the 27-year-old’s seventh career win and gave golf fans a glimpse of his major-winning best.
What clubs does Collin Morikawa use?
Let's take a look what's inside Collin Morikawa's bag:
WITB UPDATE 10/07/2024: Switched to TaylorMade P7CB irons. (Scottish Open)WITB UPDATE 24/01/2024: Switched to TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver, TaylorMade Qi10 fairway woods, TaylorMade P730 irons, TaylorMade MG4 wedges and 2024 TaylorMade TP5x ball. (Farmers Insurance Open)
COLLIN MORIKAWA DRIVER
TAYLORMADE Qi10 LS DRIVER (9°)
Collin was quick to put the new TaylorMade Qi10 driver in his bag at the start of 2024, moving on from his previous Stealth 2 Plus driver. TaylorMade’s Qi10 LS driver is designed for the best ball strikers in the game. It features a carbon fibre face that promotes ball speed and while it has the most compact head shape in the Qi10 range, it’s slightly larger than the Stealth 2 Plus and offers more forgiveness.
The Qi10’s shiny new infinity carbon crown has given TaylorMade the capacity to shift weight deeper in the head, which lowers the centre of gravity and increases MOI. And with a neutral ball flight, the Qi10 LS driver enables Collin to play his powerful fade off the tee with ease. Collin’s Qi10 LS driver is fitted with a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 60 TX shaft.
COLLIN MORIKAWA FAIRWAY WOODS
TAYLORMADE Qi10 FAIRWAY WOODS (3W 13.5°, 5W 18°)
After sticking with a combination of TaylorMade SIM and SIM2 Titanium three woods since 2020, Collin ditched them for the new TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood in early 2024. The new Qi10 three wood appears to be the perfect blend of speed and distance for Collin. With a 190cc head and TaylorMade’s new carbon fibre infinity crown, the Qi10 fairway has a low centre of gravity that creates a high launching ball flight. It’s more forgiving than the compact Qi10 Tour fairway wood but features a shallower face than the Qi10 Max fairway.
Meanwhile, Collin’s Qi10 five wood is an ideal replacement for his previous Stealth fairway. It offers a higher launch, aided by the Qi10 fairway’s lightweight carbon fibre infinity crown, and its V Steel sole offers more efficient interaction with the turf at impact. Both fairway woods are fitted with a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ Limited 80 TX shaft.
COLLIN MORIKAWA IRONS
TAYLORMADE P7CB IRONS (4-PW)
After using a blended set of TaylorMade P770, P7MC and P730 irons, Collin switched to a set of TaylorMade P7CB irons ahead of the Scottish Open in 2024.
Collin was heavily involved with the development of the P7CB iron, playing a number of prototypes in competition to deliver feedback to the TaylorMade design department. The final product bears witness to Collin’s vision. P7CB irons are forged player’s irons that feature a compact blade length, thin topline and narrow sole. Forged using TaylorMade’s Compact Grain Forging technique, which keeps the microstructure of the irons' 1025 carbon steel intact, the irons offer elite feel and precise feedback that is prerequisite for the best players in the world.
P7CB irons have tungsten weighting co-forged into the cavity back, which offers stability but doesn’t alter the inherent shot-shaping capability of the irons. A progressive centre of gravity optimises spin, control and precision through the set. Collin has True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts installed in his TaylorMade P7CB irons.
COLLIN MORIKAWA WEDGES
TAYLORMADE MG4 WEDGES (50°, 56°), MG4 TW (60°)
Collin carries a full suite of TaylorMade MG4 wedges and they complement his incredible precision inside 100 yards and around the greens. TaylorMade Milled Grind 4 wedges feature a new laser-etched groove design and accompanying micro face texture that improves spin consistency. And the soles, offered in a variety of grinds, are CNC-milled for uniformity.Collin’s MG4 wedges feature a raw finish that rusts over time. His 50° MG4 wedge has a standard grind and 9° of bounce on the sole, while his 56° wedge is a low bounce model (8°).
However, his 60° MG4 TW wedge replicates the exact grind and bounce specifications of Tiger Woods. It has 11° of bounce and the relief taken out of the leading and trail edges and heel area allows him to open the face and play every kind of shot around the greens. Collin has True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts fitted in all three of his wedges.
COLLIN MORIKAWA PUTTER
TAYLORMADE TP SOTO PUTTER
Not everyone can say they’ve holed putts to win a couple of majors like Collin can. But it doesn’t mean Collin is the sentimental type when it comes to his flatstick. The TP Juno he wielded previously has been replaced by a TP Soto; a similar Anser-style blade putter, with sharp lines, a classical appearance and 35° of toe hang. Given the quality of his iron play, if Collin starts rolling the Soto he’s always a danger.
COLLIN MORIKAWA GOLF BALL
Collin plays TaylorMade’s new 2024 TP5x golf ball, a five-layer tour ball that offers the ideal blend of distance off the tee and spin around the greens.
The new 2024 TP5x features a new Speed Wrapped Core that makes it the fastest TP5x ever made. It spins less with the driver and long irons but still offers plenty of wedge spin and stopping power on the greens. Collin’s new TP5x has a firmer feel than the TP5 ball he has played previously.
