Shane Lowry What's In The Bag? (2024)

Big, burly and bearded, Ireland’s Shane Lowry is one of golf’s most entertaining and forthright pros.

Lowry burst on the scene when winning the 2009 Irish Open as a 22-year-old amateur. Ten years later he captured the 2019 Open Championship by six strokes at Royal Portrush, winning his first major in only the second-ever playing of the Open in Ireland.

Lowry’s victory sparked wild and raucous celebrations in the gallery that day and he has since added to his winning tally on both the PGA and DP World Tours. He starred in the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, firing up the home crowd and being involved in a heated spat with Patrick Cantlay’s caddie Joe LaCava in the infamous “Hatgate” fracas.

Lowry is a Srixon staffer and is known to favour black and white outfits, a tribute to the colours of his hometown soccer team, Offaly.

DRIVER — SRIXON ZXi (8.5°)

Shane’s Srixon ZXi driver is a terrific match for his powerful game.

Featuring a sizeable footprint, the Srixon ZXi driver offers a blend of speed and forgiveness. The driver offers Shane a mid-to-low launch and spin that veers towards the lower end of things — although it's not as low-spinning as the Srixon ZXi LS driver.

Srixon’s signature iFlex Technology powers the ZXi driver. iFlex is a variable-thickness face design featuring an advanced topology that is more intricate and detailed than ever before. It was only made possible through the use of a new titanium called Ti72S, which enabled Srixon's design team to thin out the area in the centre of the face.

The ultra-thin middle zone is supported by thicker areas in the heel and toe, which interact with Srixon's Rebound Frame system. Rebound Frame permits several zones of the club head and face to distort and flex concurrently, to concentrate more energy into the ball at impact and generate extra distance off the tee.

The ZXi driver also features 10g and 4g weights at the rear of the head. Flipping the weights will create a slight draw bias but Shane's driver is geared for a straight ball flight.

Lowry’s Srixon ZXi driver is fitted with a Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 70 TX shaft.

FAIRWAY WOOD — TAYLORMADE M5 (5W, 19°)

Shane keeps things simple with just one fairway wood in his bag and it’s been a regular for a while now.

Released back in 2019, his TaylorMade M5 five wood features 19˚ of loft and is fitted with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI 8 X shaft.

UTILITY IRON — SRIXON ZXiU (3, 20°)

Shane uses his Srixon ZXiU as a long-iron replacement, and it’s frequently employed as a driving iron off tight tees.

The Srixon ZXiU is a hollow-bodied iron that has a low-centre of gravity and a hot face, helping Shane launch his long shots higher and further than a traditional three iron.

It is aimed at better players who desire precise feedback and feel rather than a myopic focus on maximising forgiveness.

Lowry’s ZXiU utility is paired with a Nipon N.S. Pro Modus 3 Tour 120 X shaft.

IRONS — SRIXON ZXi5 (4,5), SRIXON ZXi7 (6-PW)

Shane plays a mixed set of Srixon’s ZXi5 and ZXi7 irons and the combination seems to complement his elite ball striking perfectly. Both irons are equipped with a progressive groove pattern. Long irons feature wider and shallower grooves for maximum distance while the short irons are installed with deeper and narrower grooves to maximise control and spin consistency.  

Srixon ZXi7 irons are compact and streamlined forged irons, characterised by a thin topline and narrow sole.

The tour-bred design helps Shane shape and flight his shorter irons and offers him precise control, feel and feedback. Extra mass is positioned directly behind the sweet spot of the ZXi7 irons, offering extra speed and a superb feel from pure strikes — ably assisted by Srixon’s PureFrame design, which diminishes vibration.

Meanwhile, Shane plays Srixon ZXi5 irons in his longer irons. Equipped with Srixon's MainFrame technology and a toe area loaded with tungsten, the ZXi5 iron is larger, more forgiving and launches higher than the ZXi7 iron.

Srixon’s progressive VT sole design appears on both the ZXi5 and ZXi7 iron. It encourages efficient turf interaction and prevents the club head from bottoming out behind the ball.

Shane has his ZXi irons paired with KBS Tour 130 X shafts.

WEDGES — CLEVELAND RTX6 ZIPCORE (50°, 54°), CLEVELAND RTX FULL FACE (58°)

Shane carries a quiver of Cleveland wedges in his golf bag and his versatile selection of grinds and lofts helps him execute a wide range of shots into, and around, the greens.

Shane’s 50° and 54° wedges are Cleveland’s RTX6 ZipCore model. It’s a tour-grade wedge that features a low-density core (Cleveland call it ZipCore) that optimises the centre of gravity and enhances control, spin, consistency and performance. RTX6 ZipCore wedges are fitted with sharp, deep face grooves, helping Shane spin the ball and stop it on the greens from out of the fairway, rough or sand.

Shane opts for the Tour Rack finish in his RTX6 ZipCore wedges, an unplated or raw finish that rusts over time. Both wedges feature Cleveland’s mid-grind sole and 10° of bounce.

Meanwhile, Shane’s 60° RTX Full Face wedge is specifically designed to help Shane play open-faced flop shots. As the name implies, the wedge is configured with grooves that run all the way to the edge of the face and the design helps Shane generate more spin when playing high-launching, open-faced lob shots. Between the RTX Full Face’s grooves are micro grooves, which add friction to the face for additional stopping power.

Shane’s wedges are fitted with KBS Tour Wedge X Black shafts.

PUTTER — SPIDER TOUR Z

After playing an Odyssey White Hot OG 2-Ball putter, Shane switched to a TaylorMade Spider Tour Z putter midway through 2024.

It’s a similar high-MOI mallet to what Shane’s good friend Rory McIlroy plays (Spider Tour X). But it is sleeker and features a True Path alignment channel on its crown.  

The Tour Z features twin sole weights positioned towards the face which aid face rotation, making the Tour Z feel more like a blade putter — particularly in tandem with Shane's choice of a short slant neck hosel.

BALL — SRIXON Z-STAR XV

Shane plays the 2023 Srixon Z-Star XV ball and its mid-spin and mid-launch traits are well matched to his game.

The Z-Star XV is a three-layer tour-level golf ball. It’s designed to reduce spin with the driver to generate distance off the tee, however, Srixon’s new Spin Skin+ coating on the Z-Star XV’s cover elevates spin rates in the more lofted clubs, helping Shane stick it close to the pin on approach shots and around the greens.
