TaylorMade P790 Irons 2025
Posted by GolfBox on 18th Feb 2025
TaylorMade’s P790 irons are the undisputed kings of the player’s-distance category, leading the way and setting the standard since their inception in 2017.
Now, a new 2025 P790 update promises to deliver extra firepower, more consistent distance gapping through the set, and better feel, in the most profound and purposeful redesign of the iron yet.
THE P790 WINNING FORMULA
The enduring popularity of the P790 lies in its distance iron levels of forgiveness and speed, and its compact and aesthetically alluring player’s iron head shape.
Spanning a handicap divide the widest in the game, P790 irons are played by scratch golfers right through to mid-20 handicappers. Even major-winning LPGA pro Brooke Henderson games a set of P790 irons.
Given the eclectic assortment of skill levels currently playing the P790, any kind of revamp needs to keep a lot of people happy.
Thus, the new 2025 TaylorMade P790 — the fifth generation of the iron — retains much of the core technology seen in previous models. But several new advancements have made it the most lethal P790 iron to date.
P790 2025 IRONS: THINNER TOPLINE AND SOME SOLE FOOD
While a P790 iron will never be mistaken for a TaylorMade MB blade, the new edition has been remodelled to amplify its player’s iron appearance and performance.
The 2025 P790 iron retains the compact 79mm blade length that is a defining feature of the line, however, a thinner topline offers a cleaner look at address.
On the bottom of the irons, a new progressive leading edge ties in with a sole design featuring more bounce. That combination makes the new P790 iron more consistent and efficient through the turf, while also increasing workability — a characteristic appreciated by better players.
P790 2025 IRONS: NEW FACE, BETTER GAPPING
Player’s-distance irons such as the TaylorMade P790 leverage thin faces to generate fast ball speeds. And in the 2025 P790 face, things have gotten thinner and faster.
TaylorMade have forged the face from a new high-strength, high-speed material called 4340M steel. It’s 20 per cent stronger than previous varieties and it gave TaylorMade the ability to forge a face that is significantly thinner. That translates into a sweet spot that is, incredibly, 24 per cent larger than the previous P790 model.
But to make most of the fast new face material, TaylorMade reconfigured their FLTD CG head designs in each loft. The lack of vowels is concerning but we should explain that FLTD CG is TaylorMade’s loft specific head design in the P790 iron.
Exploiting high-density tungsten within the head, FLTD CG tunes mass placement and centre of gravity to optimise performance for each loft. In the long irons, the centre of gravity is positioned low to increase launch and speed. In the shorter scoring irons, it’s shifted higher to optimise spin rates and increase control.
The new FLTD CG design has also created more consistent gapping in the 2025 P790 irons. Paying attention to carry distances, launch angles and spin windows, TaylorMade have closed the gaps between the lofts, creating a more seamless and consistent transition throughout the P790 set.
P790 2025: DON’T’ FORGET THE SPEEDFOAM
Tuning sound and damping vibration are focal points in any hollow-bodied iron model. After all, if an iron doesn’t sound and feel right, what’s the point?
Thankfully TaylorMade have thrown considerable resources at the 2025 P790 to ensure the irons feel and sound better than ever. It began with a modal analysis to identify those nasty, unwanted vibrations that occur in each loft, so TaylorMade knew which ones they needed to negate.
Part of the solution was the Sound Stabilisation Bar that sits within the P790 head. The design of the bar is unique in each P790 loft. It nullifies the bad vibrations to enhance feel and sound at impact, in conjunction with TaylorMade’s signature SpeedFoam Air filler.
Injected into the P790 head, SpeedFoam Air is a lightweight material that fills the void within the hollow-bodied head. It helps reduce vibration and enhance feel, while also supporting the P790’s thin and flexible 4340M face.
